Weigh-In Wednesday: The Inauguration

April 21, 2010

Welcome to the first installation of Weigh-In Wednesday!

I’m fluctuating between excitement and apprehension about this little endeavor, but once I get an idea in my head, I have to see it through until it either flops or becomes unnecessary. My ultimate hope is that, by sharing my own weight loss (or gain) journey with you, two things will happen:

  • I will be motivated to stick to my workouts, develop better eating habits, and thereby get in shape!
    and…
  • Some of you reading this might be inspired to implement Weigh-In Wednesday on your own blogs, so that we can all continue to “spread the health” throughout the blogosphere.

Of course, other things that may happen include, but are not limited to:

  • The pressure becomes too much and I run scared in the opposite direction, gaining 37 pounds and initiating my new diet of greasy pizza and Lucky Charms.
  • It helps ME stay on track, but I bore all of YOU to tears every Wednesday and you all decide to leave me forever unless I vow to bring back regular old Wednesdays and keep my weigh-ins to myself.
    or…
  • It goes well for awhile, but eventually I get into a solid routine and the whole weigh-in thing becomes sort of irrelevant, in which case I return to regular old Wednesdays and might occasionally weigh in just for the heck of it.

Point is, who knows where this idea might lead? I’m willing to give it a go, and I hope you enjoy reading along as I subject myself to the occasional bout of public embarrassment (sweaty pictures? gluttonous confessions? weight gain?)…

But more importantly, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating small victories, because in spite of my self-deprecating tone here, I really do believe that I’m headed in a positive direction, and that weighing in publicly will help me to stick to my guns when temptation arises.

So, let’s get this show on the road!

I weighed myself this morning, so we’ll call it my starting weight. Beginning next week, I will list the prior week’s weight, my current weight, the difference for the week, and my total weight lost (or, heaven forbid, gained) overall. For now, we’ll just take a look at my starting weight…

Are you ready?

Are you SURE?!

Okay…here we go.

My current weight is:

167.8 lbs

(I’m 22.8 pounds away from my goal weight of 145!)

*****

Thanks for being such a supportive bunch, you guys! Really, I would never even consider something like this if I thought people would be cruel and throw stuff at me.

Oh, and if you feel like weighing in with me every week, please feel free! Let me know if you do, because I would be more than happy to share your links. You’re also more than welcome to snag the button at the top of this post, or make your own if you have more artistic skill than me (and chances are, you do).

Now tell me:
What’s your favorite song to listen to during an intense workout?

Update 4/22: My first post is finally up at In It To Gym It! Check it out here.

    Go, Tabitha! :-)

Also wanted to chime in with a reminder that a week-by-week weight *gain* or even zero-change isn’t necessarily a bad thing– it could also mean you’re gaining muscle while losing fat!

As for workout songs– my preferred form of exercise is swimming, so… the sound of water? :-) Back when I was at Amgen, I used to work out at the on-site gym after work, which happened to be right around the time the Simpsons was on TV, so I always watched that :-) Beyond that, I’ve had my fill of *singing* cadences during runs/marches in the Army. So… now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever actually listened to music while exercising. Hmm… interesting!

You are so brave to do this! But I think the accountability of doing this will be so helpful. When I embarked on my weight loss experience, I joined Weight Watchers. Knowing I was goign to have to weigh in at meetings each week held me accountable. And when I was tempted to cheat during the week, I asked myself – ‘do you really want to risk gaining weight this week?’

I did eventually get close to my goal weight (135, I am at 140-145 now) and no longer weigh myself. I will weigh myself occasionally but now I am at the point where the resutls don’t always show up on the scale. But for those first 6 months, the scale was definitely a huge motivator!!

Good luck with your weight loss journey!

Honey, it’ll never be irrelevant. After you get to your target weight, you can always go pro-ana, so you’ll always have a lower weight to shoot for.

I mean, who doesn’t find this attractive?

    YOU SUCK!!!!

hahaha. I kid. (Inside joke – don’t be hating on me!)

Great start, friend. I know this is important to you. And I hope these weekly weigh-ins allow you to not only feel accountable to achieve your goals, but also to feel supported along your journey.

You are so brave. I’m so nervous to post my weight, even if I’ve lost weight!!

My favorite songs are good dance club songs :) And maybe some upbeat teeny-bopper tunes.

  9. April 21, 2010 11:14 am

I need to buy a scale. And then I will totally be in this with you. I want to lose the 10 pounds I gained in the last couple of years before the wedding!!

  10. April 21, 2010 4:14 pm

Yay for you! Keep up the hard work. Can’t wait to see your weekly results! It is so important to have outside encouragement, so this is a great idea.

I’m excited for this! Your “what ifs” made me laugh, because I posted my first weight loss vlog and then it took me a couple days to freak out thinking, “what if I don’t lose anything?!” We have about the same amount of weight to lose, so it’s cool to be doing this at the same time. There’s nothing like the support of the blogging community.

  12. April 21, 2010 9:03 pm

Very brave, my friend. I love that you’re doing this in a public way. I will cheer you on every step of the way. You can do this!!

  13. April 22, 2010 10:56 am

You are a million times braver than me!

  14. April 22, 2010 3:00 pm

Oh so brave! You can definitely do it! We are rooting for you :)

  15. April 22, 2010 4:13 pm

Way to go – you’re on the right track!

Joe, that picture is awful. I didn’t know what you meant by “pro-ana” though. Does that mean a pro at being anorexic?

Great job, Tabitha! I know you’ll do marvelous!

    • April 23, 2010 3:12 pm

Yeah Mom — he meant anorexic, but DON’T WORRY! He was totally kidding, as only Joe can kid. :-P

      Thanks for the love!

oh joe… what a silly guy.

james was actually talking about how he likes this idea and that we may (if we’re brave enough) do something similar. we don’t know if we’re going to incorporate it into my already existent blog or what. i don’t know, we’ll keep you posted. and we can definitely link up every wednesday (assuming i’m dedicated enough to send the link every week. haha. might have to teamwork that one with the guy who’s on the interwebs all day every day. haha.

but i’m proud of you, girl. keep it up and you can bet that no matter what happens every wednesday, you’re going to have SO much support you won’t know what to you with yourself. i can promise that.

Hi Tabitha! I just came over to your blog from ITTGI and I love what you are doing! I myself am embarking on the what seems never-ending treck to losing weight. I love your determination! I found after reading some of your entries from your blog (no, not in a creepy way) that you provide me with some motivation. I HATE running and have tried to get better at it – I used to cry at the thought of having to run a mile when I was in school. Now I’m slowwly getting used to it and I love that you are tracking your progress! Makes me want to join ya!

  19. April 23, 2010 11:47 am

Weigh-In Wednesdays are officially IN on my blog. I’ll motivate you if you motivate me! I need someone to encourage me so maybe we can be buddies from afar.

Can you cyber-slap a twinkie out of my hand?

Also, I was thinking of putting pictures of Megan Fox on my fridge to discourage me from eating. So every time I see it, I will either (a) walk away from the fridge in hopes of one day looking like that or (b) realize that I will never look like that, get depressed, and eat double.

This plan could totally backfire. Here’s my blog:

  20. April 23, 2010 12:17 pm

We have the same goal weight :) Now that my exercise is changing a little bit, I have to adjust my workouts so that I can get there… I was close but this whole no running thing is messing it up a bit. So let’s do this together!

  21. April 24, 2010 8:04 am

I have the exact same fears whenever I blog about weight loss…mainly because I’ve done it times before and have fallen off the wagon. But I’m determined to stick with it…even if I go an entire month without losing a single pound, which looks like will happen for this month. Yikes!

I can’t wait to read more!

  22. April 25, 2010 12:29 pm

Congrats on being brave!! I started weekly weigh ins too but on Sundays (because that’s when my nutrition/exercise resets for the next week). I call it “Shrinking Sundays” and today is my 2nd check in. I’ll be back to cheer you on :)
