“Monnnday, Mondaaaaay…”
Oh, boy. Back to work after a week and a half off. Can you sense my excitement?
I’ve finally caught up on my Google Reader enough that I’m not literally cowering in the corner afraid to look at it. And after reading tons of lovely holiday recaps, decade-in-review posts, and resolution lists, I felt like saying, “Bah, humbug!” to ever posting again, because I just can’t measure up to all that stuff right now.
I had a lovely (though lacking in very much rest) holiday, and my last ten years of life have been truly interesting. But I don’t feel inspired to write about those things right now — I just want to be here and now. You’d think that would lead me to at least make a resolution list, right?
Wrong. But I do have this pesky little list called 101 in 1001. And I figure having that list around should more than make up for the fact that I’m stubbornly NOT making any “resolutions.” Am I right?
And anyway, I looked at the list today and realized that I’ve inadvertently made some progress! So let’s highlight that, since it feels good to know I’m doing something constructive after all.
Here are a few things I’ve begun to chip away at without even thinking, “I can cross this off my list!” —>
#005. Spend an entire day away from the computer at least once every three months for a year.
During the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, there were three or four entire days during which I did not get onto a computer at all. I don’t really know how to factor that into this item, except to say that I have successfully knocked out three months’ worth of computer avoidance. Yay!
#059. Complete a crossword puzzle in its entirety without cheating (consulting a friend is okay).
This one is 99% done, and without even consulting a friend! Granted, it’s the crossword puzzle inside an issue of People magazine, but hey. It was still hard. I have two or three more slots to figure out, and then it’s finished. (These are the kinds of things I did while I wasn’t on the computer last week. So much more edifying, I know.)
036. Visit my grandmother once a month for six months.
Joe and I visited my grandma the week of Christmas, before we left town for the desert. And then on New Year’s Day, my mom and I visited my grandma. So, yes! That totally counts as one a month — for two separate months! I think I will likely end up seeing her more than just once a month, but it feels good just knowing I finally made the effort to do it…especially since she lives two miles away from me now.
#068. Try ten local restaurants.
I’m tempted to count places like Woodstock’s Pizza and Palazzio’s Italian restaurant, but those are places we frequent somewhat regularly, and thus I’ve already “tried” them. But yesterday, Joe and I went to a Thai restaurant for a friend’s birthday get-together, and that definitely counts. It was called Your Choice Thai Restaurant, and I actually LIKED what I got there. Yes, that was a pig you just saw flying past your screen. Anyway, I’m a little nervous about this item on the list, because Joe and I are, for one thing, creatures of habit. And also? We’re trying to get healthy, and therefore have decided to make a major effort NOT to eat out as much. Hmm…

So, there are a few things I’m making progress on. I’ve also got a few other items on my radar, some of which I’ll talk more about soon (the title for my next post MIGHT be something along the lines of, “Beware: At-Risk Newlyweds Might Be HOARDERS!”) — and one of which is #013. Go to a taping of a talk show or other live-audience TV show.
See, I found out a couple weeks ago that my dad and my little sister have auditioned for Wheel of Fortune, and they just might make it on! I think they find out in February, so the suspense is SURE to kill me before we ever know for sure…but if it doesn’t, and they DO? I will be very excitedly CHECKING OFF this item, and also digging up any amount of dirt I might have on my sister so that when she wins a hundred grand, I can hold said dirt over her head and demand half the dough.

LOVE the new header. And I’m totally supportive of your not making resolutions – I see these 101 in 1001 lists and they inspire me… and scare the heck out of me. I am thinking of making one at some point – maybe in the 1001 days before I turn 30?
If you haven’t already tried Brummi’s, I highly, highly, *highly* recommend it!
That Sunday lunch at the Thai restaurant was my FIRST time ever eating Thai food. I’d heard lots of things about Thai food that really turned me off to ever wanting to try it (very sweet, very spicy– I don’t like spicy food), but Sunday provided a rare opportunity to finally try it. When I heard that the pad thai noodles were the standard safe choice, I decided I couldn’t go wrong with that– and was happy to discover that it wasn’t too exotic
I’ll still take hearty German fare over spicy Asian cuisine any day, though!
#036 – Proud of you!!!
#059 – I can’t do it!!! I have to collectively finish one with Keith to even stand a chance….
for #068 – plan to find 10 new HEALTHY restaurants that you and joe can enjoy!! Mediterranean, Sandwich shops, Deli’s for salads, etc.
LOL…Yes, that last sentence definitely made me Laugh Out Loud! Maybe she’ll first have to split half with her daddy. We’d love to pay off some debt. Oh, by the way, do you know they have a MILLION DOLLAR wedge now? Yes, I really said that; they really have a million dollar wedge. You have to jump through a number of hoops to actually win the million (duh!), but at least one person has done it.
I’m proud of all you’ve accomplished on your list (especially the one about visiting Grandma as it was such a joyful occasion with you there)!
Glad to see you back in posting mode. You always bring smiles to my face.
Love, Mom
LOL Your comment about being done with seeing your grandma for two months (I think that’s not what you meant) just made me burst out giggling, because you’re so sweet and kind and that just sounded really out of character!
Trying local restaurants is a fun way to get involved in your community and to get more of a sense of the local flavour. We have an amazing Ethiopian restaurant close by us, as well as an outstanding French bistro- it’s so good to have those places in your back pocket!
And also, having gone to this French Bistro a little too much, it doesn’t hurt than when I go in now the chef pops out from the kitchen and shouts “Hey Kyla!”. It makes me feel really cool! lol
Staying away from a computer for days on end would make me twitchy. Even with my iPhone. You’re awesome, girl.
I can cross that computer one off my list too! It was so great to NOT be near technology, including my cell phone. So lovely and happy.
Wheel of Fortune!? Seriously!? How cool. If they do you MUST let us know when it airs so we can watch and know semi-famous people.
that’s super cool. is your 101 in 1001 list actually POSTED anywhere? because i’m enough of a dork that i want to look at it.
Yep — it’s posted right up there in the tab next to “About Me” — or you can just go here: http://probablytabitha.com/101-in-1001/
