Probably the best.

December 18, 2009

So I’ve been toying (again) with the idea of getting rid of the “dot-wordpress” portion of my blog URL, and therefore scouring the recesses of my brain for clever blog names, while concurrently checking GoDaddy for the availability of said clever names. (And what the HECK, people? Why is every clever name I come up with already taken? And don’t even say, “Because you’re not that clever.” Punks.)

Anyway, I’m still searching for the brilliant dot-com that will perfectly encompass everything this blog is about — so suggestions are MORE THAN welcome.

But in the search for potential names I had a memory. A memory that made me laugh out loud (srsly, lol) and almost snort apple juice out my nose. A memory that is probably not that funny to anyone else, but one I will share with you today nonetheless:

So, in college I went to Romania with my women’s choir, and we got to see something like 15 different towns across the country. And every little shopping center, tourist area and fast-food storefront had those round tables with the giant umbrella over the top of them. And all of these umbrellas, no matter where we were, had the logo for a brand of beer on it. There was Ciuc, Ursus, Timisoreana, Silva, and who knows how many others…

And then there was Carlsberg.

The first time we came upon a Carlsberg umbrella, one girl suddenly BURST into laughter. Like, uncontrollable, I’m-a-crazy-person type laughter. So, naturally, we all gathered around her to see what was so funny. She was pointing at the umbrella and trying to get the words out, when finally she mustered, “It’s…it’s…probably! *cackle* the best!”
You see, Carlsberg’s slogan is “Probably the best beer in the world.”

And for some reason, that struck ALL of us as the most hilarious slogan ever. Like, “Hey, we’re not totally sold on this stuff either, but it’s probably the best?”

So for the rest of the trip, anytime something funny/cool/weird/crazy happened, one of us would inevitably follow it with, “That’s…probably the best.

***

…See? I told you it probably wasn’t that funny. But it still cracks me up every time I remember it. And today I remembered it because, in my quest for the perfect dot-com, I started thinking about words I use a lot in my writing and/or speech, and “probably” was one of the first to come to mind. Is it just me, or do I use it a lot around here?

So anyway, probablythebest.com is totally taken. Suck. But I could always go with probablytabitha.com.

I’m not sold on it, though. So seriously, friends! Give me some ideas!

And happy Friday!

Update: Out of curiosity, I searched my blog to see how many posts included the word “probably.” And there are OVER SIXTY. I’d say that constitutes using the word a lot, right? Yeah, you’re probably right.

I thought about it…or, I guess, I’m thinking about it. Is it dumb, though?

i don’t think so. you could always just stick with tabithablogs.com too. was that one taken? i like the idea of keeping your name in the URL. maybe that’s just me.

Yeah, tabithablogs.com is available, too. And I’m also a fan of having my name in there somewhere. Although I have gone back and forth on the whole “anonymity” prospect, but I think I’m too blatant to be secretive…if that makes sense. haha.

Oh, and the comment below yours, from Helly — that’s one thing that turns me off of tabithablogs.com. What if someday I wanted to use my URL for something more (or other) than blogging?

        Hmm…things to ponder!

I’ve always liked your original “justtabitha” moniker, so “probablytabitha” works, too :-)

I have no suggestions at the moment, but what I *would* suggest is that you pick something generic enough that’s reflective of you and yet doesn’t restrict you to certain aspects of a website, like blogging. You might end up using the site for other things someday, and can duly differentiate: blogs.probablytabitha.com, photos.probablytabitha.com, etc…

I wish I knew you and your blog a wee bit better to give you ideas. One thing to think about is whether you’ll always want to blog/have an online presence under your name. Would there ever be a time (i.e., a job/boss that cares) when having a blog under your name might pose a problem? If so, I’d *probably* consider something else. ProbablyBlogs.com?

That is probably hilarious! I like probablytabitha… very cute, in my opinion.

i agree, that is probably the best slogan ever.

I like Probablytabitha! :) – although I am a little late to the party, sorry :)

Haha, I’ve ALWAYS loved that slogan. What about “probablyhilarious” or “probablyentertaining”/entertained or something like that?

I’m hoping to drop the .wordpress part of mine sometime soon too – mine is WAY too difficult to spell so I’m all for suggestions too (all my good ones are taken, too…)

You know my feelings on it! I really love it, and I think that as far as privacy goes I think that using your first name (*waves hello, welcome to my life*) is really safe- if you google tabitha there are tons of results & as long as your facebook privacy settings are ramped up a bit so you don’t come up in a general search you’re fine.

Have fun going to a .com! My advice is to buy your .com wherever you buy your hosting or you have to re-route your .com to your hosting and it adds a whole other hurdle to hop over & it takes time for your .com to track to your hosting (and in my experience godaddy.com is useless for customer support so I might think about using a slightly smaller company!)

That is a very funny story actually. I’ve heard of the beer but never their slogan and now I know why =) Maybe I’ll have to try it and figure out if it’s “probably” the best, except I’ve also discovered I’m all kinds of allergic to beer now too. That just plain stinks.

Yeah — boo for weird allergies! But I’m still somehow comforted to know that you and I are in a similar boat there…
