Scary Stories! (inspired by Nora)

October 30, 2009

I wasn’t planning on posting anything today because I’ve got a huge to-do list of things to accomplish on my day off from work, but since I’ve gotten quite a bit accomplished already, I took a break to browse my Google Reader. And, thanks to Nora’s fabulous Halloweenish post, I’ve been inspired to tell you a couple of scary stories. Hopefully these will be a bit scarier than yesterday’s Beaker Phenomenon.

So Nora wrote about her fear of people wearing masks — and if you read her post (which you should definitely do) you’ll understand that she’s totally justified. Anyway, she asked people what fear or phobia they might have, especially around Halloween time, and I immediately thought of two specific stories to share with you all.

I don’t have any particular fears related to Halloween, and in fact I even LIKE to be scared sometimes. But all the same, when I get scared, I do not forget it easily. Thus, I give you two little anecdotes for your Creepy Day enjoyment.

One: Knott’s SCARY Farm Lives Up to Its Name

Back in middle school, my brother and I went on a trip (I think with a group of church kids) to Knott’s Scary Farm for Halloween. It was definitely spooked out, including park workers decked out in creepy costumes, fake spiders and webs all over, and all kinds of other typical creepy stuff — all to be expected, right? But what we DIDN’T expect was that the park workers would jump at us out of NOWHERE and scare the living daylights out of everyone. Yeah, there were mummies and zombies sneaking up behind us, lurching in front of us and practically flying through the AIR just to get a couple of screams. And screams they got…mostly from me and the other girls in the group.

But the best part of the night was that my brother got the brilliant idea to start trying to scare THEM — the park workers. And a couple of times, he definitely pulled it off. Seeing the mummy who moments ago was terrorizing our group suddenly jump three feet out of his costume when my brother snuck up on him? Totally made the creep factor WORTH IT that night.

Two: There Goes My Street Cred?

My sophomore year in college, a bunch of friends were hanging out on Halloween trying to decide what to do, and talking about best costumes, scary stories, and all that fun stuff. I had just finished saying something to the effect of, “I don’t get scared easily,” when Brad, one of the macho guys of our group, came from out of NOWHERE (seriously, to this DAY I can’t figure out where he came from) with the creepiest, grossest mask on his face. He was moaning and growling and just RIGHT IN MY FACE, and I lost it. I mean, I screamed like a four-year-old girl and practically wet my pants. Brad took his mask off and then he and everyone else started cracking up at my pathetic display of confidence. So much for “I don’t get scared easily” right?

Well, there you have it. Some Halloween treats from yours truly. Now, I’ve got to get back to my day of non-scary chores. Unless, of course, you count the HEAPS AND HEAPS of laundry I’m drowning in…

Happy Day-Before Halloween!

Um, yeah, I don’t do well when people jump out at me EVEN if I know they are going too. And, well, you already know I hate masks. =) Great stories though and thanks for sharing!
