Truth Tuesday, Part 1: The Answer (and a story)
Hey folks! Today I’ve got a lot going on, so I haven’t had a chance to come up with this week’s round of Truth Tuesday statements, but I’ll try to do it before the day is over! For now, I know you’ve all been waiting with bated breath (ha) for the answer to last week’s edition…
Here’s a refresher of the statements:
- Never have I ever helped my dad build a computer.
- Never have I ever sung the National Anthem at a school event.
- Never have I ever taken a pregnancy test.
So, this one was tricky because two of the statements are lies, which means I actually DID one of the things I said I didn’t do, and I didn’t do two of them (making them correct). Gah, it’s too confusing to even explain, right? Anyway, here we go.
Number one…is true. I have never helped my dad build a computer — at least not to my recollection.
Number two (which is the one that got the most votes for being false)…is also TRUE. I have never sung the National Anthem at a school event.
Which means that only two people got it right by guessing that number three was false. Congrats to Helly and Genellyn! You guessed it right, because I have, in fact, taken a pregnancy test. (In fact, I’ve taken two now.)
Alas, I must explain.
So I’ve been on birth control since February, and it has done a wonderful job of regulating my period (and majorly lessening cramps, woo!) so that it comes pretty predictably during the week that I’m on the non-hormone pills. This may be a little Too Much Information, but it’s important for background: there had been one month where I had some light spotting the week before I was supposed to get my period (before I got married and started having sex, so it wasn’t a preggo scare), but then I got my period normally the next week. My doctor said that some spotting during the first months on the pill is totally normal.
Cue the first month of marriage, and specifically the week before my period was supposed to start, and I had that same week of light spotting. I thought nothing of it, assuming I would get a regular period the next week and everything would be peachy.
But I didn’t get my period at all that week (the 24th) so I got a little worried. I started to think about other “symptoms” I was feeling lately — fatigue; some pretty awful acid reflux (which I know comes a lot later in pregnancy); tender breasts; mild backaches…
So I bought a home pregnancy test.
And while Joe was at his friend’s bachelor party last weekend, I took it.
Digital results appeared within two minutes, saying clearly: “Not Pregnant.”
Okay.
But what if it’s too soon to tell? Or the cheapo pregnancy test I got from Kmart is inaccurate?
Thus, I called my gynecologist to ask her what she thought of the situation. She said not to freak out, and that I could come in for a blood test if I wanted, but she recommended waiting to see if I got my period this next month. However, her next question was, “Did you take the pregnancy test first thing in the morning?”
Uh…no. Why?
“Because the results are more accurate in the morning with your first pee, since it’s most concentrated. You should try it again in the morning, just in case.”
So I took the second pregnancy test (since the box came with two) around last Thursday, I think.
The result, again, was “Not Pregnant.”
So either I’m not pregnant, or, if I am, the test was bogus or my hormone levels are too low to register, or any number of other possibilities. But I’m pretty sure I’m not. (We’ll see when my next period is due…which is in a couple of weeks!)
The good news? A whole month of newlyweddedness without a period! My lovely new sheets are grateful.
Anyway, there you have it. The reason I have taken a pregnancy test within my first month of marriage.
Stay tuned for a new round of Truth Tuesday, hopefully!

Well, that is quite the story! Funny how I have had similar symptoms (sleepiness, acid reflux, etc) and my doc asked me if I was preggers. I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared during the pee test they did while I was there!!! I’m not (Thankfully). However, I landed myself with strep and then a sinus infection and still don’t feel stellar. I blame work and stress. Is that possible?
I hope everything in the lady area regulates itself nicely for you soon. I hate ambiguity in that region.
My dear sweet little girl…you TOTALLY blew a “free” TMI blog with this one! You could’ve ‘teased’ today and gotten peeps to come back on Thursday for the ‘story’ mentioned in the subject line.
Now you’ve gotta come up with a whole new TMI! LOL.
Thanks for the clarifications above but wouldn’t be just like God to so show His sense of humor (and Omnipotence) with you getting preggo’d on your honeymoon, even while being on the ‘pill’?
Those tests are usually 99.9% accurate, so if you took one twice, chances are you really aren’t pregnant.
(Insert BIG sigh of relief here!)
After reading all my rampant oh-my-god-I’m-PREGNANT?! posts, thank your lucky stars. You definitely need a good few solid years of marriage before you want to introduce babies into the picture!
I had four years and it still doesn’t feel like enough! BTW I took my test at 4 in the afternoon and it still was a big, fat whopping positive sign!!
It’s always the unlikely answers that are the right ones
Ref: grateful sheets: vinyl tablecloths work well
Ugh, I just went through a lovely round of that as well. I don’t know about you, but the waiting and not knowing just eats my lunch!
Wow. I can only imagine the ups and downs. I hope that all is well. I’d agree that your sheets are grateful
