A special Haiku Friday dedication.
It’s that time again…Haiku Friday! And this time, I actually put a little thought into it.
See, I was reading over some old Facebook messages from way back in May when I first met Joe, and I came to realize that there is one person who is largely responsible for my having given Joe the time of day at all. Because, long story short, my lame-o stubborn butt was about to be all, “Psh. I’m not looking for anyone right now, and besides — he’s not very tall.” (Yep, I am a horrible person. Or was. Or almost was.) Anyway, I was reading a particular snippet from this particular person, and I thought, “This almost sounds poetic. I wonder if it will fit into a haiku without feeling completely forced.” And guess what? It kind of did. Maybe. I’ll let you be the judge. But just know that anything that is in quotations attributed to this amazing person in my life is word-for-word what she wrote to me (though I will emphasize some stuff). And also remember that I have the greatest boyfriend ever, and if I ever found the list I made a couple years ago of all the things I “needed” in a husband, I would probably laugh at myself, feel a little (or a lot) ashamed at my shallowness, burn it, and thank God for not allowing my own blindness to hinder His blessings.
K, without further ado: this week’s episode of Haiku Friday. Dedicated to my favorite St. Patty’s Day redhead.
my cousin Sarah gave me
some words of wisdom:
“Just pray about it
and see where the Lord leads you…”
(Now there’s a thought!); then
Sarah continued,
“From my own experience
I’ve found that sometimes…”
(A cow goes moo?* Er…)
“God leads you in directions…”
(Okay, I’m with ya–
but this is intense!)
“…you wouldn’t have predicted,”
(Wait, what? Why?!) “…and it’s
“always better than
what you originally
had planned.” (But, but, but–)
I am only now
putting this all together
and recognizing
Just how right she was.
Imagine if I had said,
“Nah, he’s not my type.”
Because, though this may
shock and appall you to know,
Joe WASN’T “my type.”
So thank you, Jesus
(and of course — thank you, Sarah!)
for being so wise
and knowing my heart
even better than I did.
Joseph: I love you.
(*inside joke: you just had to be there.)

So…do you think in Haiku, or what? How long does it take you two write up something like this? It would take me forever!
Haha, no I don’t think in Haiku…at least not on purpose. I guess maybe it’s a combination of my sense of rhythm and my vocabulary/love of writing? It took me a little longer with this week’s haiku, just because I had to make Sarah’s comments fit in the syllable structure and still make sense (hence all the little interruptions I added). But usually I write a whole haiku Friday post in under 20 minutes.
